Picky Eater

Today for my blog, I am going to list all of the foods I don't like to eat. Some might have reasons, some might not. I am a very picky eater, so get ready.
ham. roast beef. fish. seafood of any kind. most sausage (although I do enjoy turkey pepperettes and farmer's sausage and salami). cauliflower. velveeta cheese unless it's melted. wine. beer. tapioca. brussel's sprouts. any type of game meat. tofu. tongue. rhubarb. grapefruit. coffee. banana flavoured things. dates.

I guess that isn't a lot. In life, it seems like more.

The tactics I used to use as a child when my mom would serve me any of the above (mostly fish) would be to put it in my mouth, then sneakily take it out and movie it to my pocket. I would do that will all of the fish on my plate, then head to the bathroom and flush it down the toilet. When I became older, I finally reasoned with my parents and told them I would never eat fish, so they may as well not spend the extra money by putting it on my plate as it just goes to waste. So, my mom would usually make me a chicken breast. Now, my family just waits for a night I am not going to be home to have fish. How accomodating, really.

My current top foods are kalmata olives, feta cheese, hard boiled eggs, Chef Boyardee ravioli straight from the can, Kraft Dinner, BBQ hot dogs, and chocolate.

Famoso

Last night I had the most enjoyable evening of dinner and entertainment provided by my friend Amy's choir, Belle Canto for their pre-Italy tour concert.

First, the food. I went to Famoso both because of the easily accessible downtown location and the delectable reputation it has for being voted "Edmonton's #1 pizza." First, I ordered a half order of the caprese salad. It was a new take on the caprese which usually has tomatoes, basil, and fresh mozzarella cheese. This one substituted fresh baby greens for the basil. It was scrumptious! This is how Rach makes it http://rachaelray.com/recipe.php?recipe_id=400

Then came the Primavera pizza which is 11 inches of gold. Topped with artichokes, onions, kalmata olives, and red peppers, the pizza was great! I finished half and brought the rest for lunch today, which was just as good cold, BTW.

Then it was off to the choir recital at http://www.rwuc.org/ where Belle Canto sang 24 selections that they will be performing on their tour in Italy. I was filled with harmony and perfect pitch for 2 delightful hours!

What an evening!

The Woman in the Row Behind

I stumbled upon this book at the when I was looking for another book that I had to request. It was in the section called "short reads."

The story is about a boring couple living mundane lives. The wife cheats. The husband goes to a movie alone and she follows him dressed in disguise. They flirt in the theatre. What does it all mean? Are they both equally wrong for cheating?

I guess I'll find out.

Meanwhile, I've realised how at peace I am in my life right now. I have very little anxiety, I sleep extremely well, and I am eating less. This in itself is a miracle. I go to church more often, pray more, spend time with people who love me, and do things that make me happy. It's quite a remarkable feeling when this all falls into place.

Now, where is my man?

Shanghai Girls

I just finished reading Shanghai Girls by Lisa See and must take it back to the library pronto! This is the 3rd Lisa See book I've read and enjoyed. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan was the first I've read from her and I really loved it. The history in the novel seeped into my brain, and I will never forget the descriptions of foot binding practices in China (which has been outlawed, but is still done in remote villages) or the relationship with "old sames" that young girls share.

Then I read Peony in Love, which I didn't enjoy as much. For me, the writing wasn't as strong as Snow Flower.

I absolutely loved Shanghai Girls, and I think it is my favourite so far! The story is set in China and Los Angeles from the 1930 - 1960's where the Chinese fled from their homeland and many came to San Francisco and were placed in Los Angeles in the Chinatown there. This is a great book about family, loyalty, tradition, and becoming "Amercianized."

I am off to the library to find my next read, Good to A Fault by Marina Endicott.

Borrowed

For the last few weeks I've been inspired to start blogging by a number of blogs I've read. Interestingly enough, most of these blogs are posted by new Moms. Which I'm so not. But, I still like the idea of sharing bits of my life and some of my thoughts. So, I thought I'd give it a shot.

I tried to figure out what I'd mostly write about. There are two things I do on a daily basis (that is interesting) and that is eat and read. Things I do on a regular basis that I don't think will make a great blog include thinking about Glee, singing Glee songs, talking to people about Glee, thinking about Taylor Lautner, thinking about Taylor Lautner movies, talking to people about Taylor Lautner, Oprah, and weddings.

So really, you are all getting the good end of the stick with food and books.

Here we go!
